News for Cheshire

News for Cheshire is the blog of the campaign to get the BBC news website to provide dedicated news coverage of our county, which it doesn't do. Currently, users of the BBC's news website have to hunt on the pages for Merseyside, Manchester and Staffordshire if they want Cheshire news. Other contributors are welcome, just get in touch if you'd like to write for the campaign.

Transmission truth

Good evening, viewers.

If you missed Newswatch tonight, don't forget it's still available on the internet until Friday 11 April. We'll be aiming to get the clip on YouTube asap, too.

I think we can all agree that there was the surprise announcement of a Cheshire news page in the offing. They have until January 2009 to make good on the promises.

In the meantime, the campaign is not going away. We'll be keeping up the pressure this year, particularly on the BBC Trust (the governing body) as it's their ultimate decision. So we'll still be blogging and reporting and keeping an eye on the state of play.

But there is indeed light at the end of the tunnel.

Thought you got your arguments across really well, think the BBC has realised they need to sort something out, hopefully sooner rather than later.
All the best

Thanks, Craig. The feedback elsewhere has also been really encouraging. It is certainly appreciated that the Beeb is trying to sort out the "black hole" but I think Tamsin O'Brien is going to have a very hard job convincing Cheshire's licence payers as to why it is "inappropriate" to have an interim solution (ie, a county page on the current News Online site) before the Trust approves the proposed package. When everyone else has a news page and local content, telling Cestrians it's inappropriate for us to have the same for at least a year is a fob-off to say the least. There really is no good reason for the BBC to continue its current "head in sand" position. This is not an issue for the Trust at all, as far as I'm concerned - the issue is about rectifying the historical oversight of not including Cheshire and that should never require Trust approval.
